No you are "normal". That kind of holiday is my idea of hell.

It was explained to me years ago why people walked around a shopping centre for "leisure" purposes. However the folk who I met who did it were from hotter countries and it still didn't explain why British people who weren't teens did it.

You should try it. Go into the sauna, get all sweaty, quick shower, into the plunge pool and then lie - on your towel - on a sunbed gently steaming. It's a marvelous way to relax.

Yeah, sure, in my own villa, I agree those are enjoyable activities.

To each to their own, I guess. Personally, my idea of a good holiday is a v8 and desert roads or hiking a bazillion miles away from civilisation . There are some nice touristy areas, but I'd rather do those mid-week, off-season. I am assuming the level of pettiness was them carrying it on after they'd moved the towels but I've got absolutely no problems with them moving towels from beds that haven't been used for a couple of hours. If you go cruising, particularly on the bigger boats it's mandatory to have to kick people off that reserve for hours. There just isn't enough beds. The deck staff are generally pretty good at doing it themselves after about an hour but if you spot one that's been free for a few hours then it's open season IMO.

You have to be careful though, there is the other end that will take your towels off the minute they turn up. We had one delightful couple try take our towels off while we had our backs turned talking to someone else. We pointed out we've just arrived, put towels down ready to actually use the beds and they still had a grumble. They just walked off and picked off the towels of the next sunbed who happened to be at the bar. They got a bad rep on day one which didn't serve them well for the rest of the cruise.

Two hours absolute tops and you lose it in my book.

At one resort, the guests would "book" their loungers and then go and have a leisurely breakfast. We had young kids then so started the day early. We'd just pick up all the towels and put them on one lounger. It didn't seem to discourage them though.

You'd think the hotels would let you book them... for a fee.

A couple who noticed fellow hotel guests had ‘reserved’ sun loungers before 6.30am – but didn’t turn up for nine hours – made sure to get their ‘petty’ revenge.

Australians Thom and Lisa spotted towels left on unattended sunbeds when they got up on Wednesday at Grand Barong Resort in Bali.

With the loungers still empty at 2pm the pair decided to claim the beds for themselves, only for the people who’d left the towels to arrive at 3.30pm.

Thom and Lisa, however, refused to move and even asked other guests to take their spots after they’d gone ‘to keep the pettiness going’.
Thom shared his experience online and fellow posters praised the pair, agreeing leaving towels on seats all day was ‘sun hogging’ and disrespectful, reports The Daily Mail.

Leaving a towel unfurled on a sun lounger has long been seen as a sign it’s taken, but many resorts have started banning guests from reserving spaces because of situations like this.

Thom wrote: ‘We woke up this morning [and] noticed towels already placed on the afternoon shade sunbeds. We went about our day and eventually arrived at the pool at 1pm to the beds untouched, nobody in sight.’

At 2pm, he said, they told pool staff they were moving the towels as nobody had been on them.

‘We then waited until 3:30pm for them to eventually arrive and the realisation that their spots are gone, iPads and books in hand was priceless.’
Lisa added: ‘We literally left and asked others to take them just to keep the pettiness going.’

It seems the couple’s efforts had the desired effect. The following day Thom posted victory picture of empty loungers with the words ‘Free all day’.

One person wrote under is original post: ‘Proof that not all heroes wear a cape,’ while another said: ‘Would shout you both a Bintang if I were there.’


Some people commended the couple for not claiming the loungers earlier.

One wrote: ‘I would’ve done the same except I wouldn’t have waited – if they weren’t there using them its free for all.’

Although some hotels have banned it, reserving sun loungers at the crack of dawn is still a common practice at many resorts, often leading to so-called ‘sunbed wars’ among guests.
