Yeah but as a back-bencher you'd still want to be in power, it's the cabinet who get all the blame.

Arguably, there is a real chance for the next government to actually preside over a period of growth and general improvement (even if mostly relative to the previous bad times). It is risky but ambitious people believe they can win.

Perhaps he has ambitions to be leader again but it seems a little unlikely and I don't believe Boris to be stupid.

I suspect his perfect plan is to hang on to his seat and hope the Tories lose the next election. Then he'll have a campaign bus with '80 -> -10 seats' on the side of it.

I think the next election will be quite tight. Rishi's crew are targeting vote winning strategies and have an air of competence (compared to recent events). If they get the flights to Rwanda going, would Labour say they will stop them?

Reviews into government's response to Covid are important, but wasting all this time on how many sausage rolls people had seems a waste of time and money and is a distraction from all the important things government are (or aren't) doing. A nice bit of tabloid sensationalism is great for distracting people from whatever else is going on right now.
