Senior labour folk admitted they'd probably lost the next GE as soon as the results of the last one came round. That kind of swing within a single cycle is pretty unusual.

If Boris and co can avoid more than the normal level of calamitous gaffes they are somewhat a shoe-in, and right now they are running pretty much unopposed.

If he's looking further afield, Cummings might be available.

Alastair Campbell was a key player in Blair's victories.

Actually by 2029 it will be 55 years, the last time a Labour leader other than Tonly Blair won a general election was in 1974.

    I remember that.

If it hadn't been for Covid, I'm sure Trump would have got re-elected. In fact, aides told him back in January or February of last year that the pandemic was the only threat to his 2nd term. Fortunately for Biden, Trump didn't listen and instead tried to downplay the virus and then completely mishandled things.

The Tories didn't handle it brilliantly either but they were nowhere near as bad as the Trump administration. And the excellent vaccine roll-out has made up for some of the earlier shortcomings.

Barring unforeseen events, Labour only stands a chance of getting into power when the country has become thoroughly sick of Johnson and the Tories (like at the end of the Thatcher/Major years).

I don't believe changing the Labour leader would make much difference.

    The Official DOOM: Labour

Gloomy Labour Loses Hope as Boris Johnson Upends U.K. Politics

Senior figures in Keir Starmer’s U.K. opposition Labour Party already see little hope of winning back power in the next general election as many as three years away.

One Labour official privately gave the party “zero” chance of beating Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservatives, while a member of Starmer’s top team in Parliament gloomily called it an “uphill battle.” They and others spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue.

The problem Labour officials see is the near-impossible task of competing with Johnson, a man who has upended the rules of normal politics.“
