If your skills are cr*p then no you won't find work.
Also the likes of the large consultancies actually hire contractors.
A lot of my work has been through consultancies. The issue that a few clients have had is team cohesion. So they hire you for your personal skills rather than ability just to do the work.

Contractor roles are getting more & more scarce with lot of people in market. The balance is not there. Clients have become more & more choosy, n number of interview rounds, they are demanding more skills & domain expertise...
