But the flies survived
Drosophila fruit flies that were also travelling on the satellite, however, survived and had reproduced, Roscosmos said. No mention about whether the mushrooms lived or died.

ITAR-TASS: Non-political - Geckos in Russia
Please... a moment of silence and respect for the brave Gecko cosmonauts.MOSCOW, September 02. /ITAR-TASS/. Geckos aboard Russia’s Photon satellite that landed on Monday had died due to low-temperature-caused decrease in metabolic rates entailing inability to digest food, Vladimir Sychev, a deputy director of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medico-Biological Problems, told ITAR-TASS on Tuesday.

Driving down the M1 last week, there was suddenly a road sign with a picture that looked very like that diagram. Turns out it was for the Royal Armouries. I suppose it was a version of this:Originally posted by xoggoth View PostSome of the most interesting/weird stories are only in The Independent. Probably only The Metro is better.

Now officially confirmed: Russia confirms death of five geckos on space sex mission | Science | theguardian.comOriginally posted by NickFitz View PostBut… reports coming in that they're all dead

The federal space agency released a statement saying the landing apparatus of the Photon-M satellite had returned to earth as planned, falling into Russia’s Orenburg region at 1.18pm Moscow time, and that the entire herpetological crew had perished at some point during their odyssey. With four female lizards and one male on board, Russian scientists had hoped to learn how zero gravity would affect the sexual habits of geckos.
A representative at the Institute of Biomedical Problems (ISTC), which participated in the experiment, explained to Russian news agency Itar-Tass: “The lizards died about a week before landing,” but added: “It’s still too early to talk about the geckos’ cause of death.”
