If you end up finding something in Abu Dhabi then you can still live in Dubai (Marina area) and it's about an hour's drive to get to Abu Dhabi airport (for Eithad jobs) add another 30 mins if you are in the City. Note that Dubai is more 'relaxed' than Abu Dhabi.
Thanks for this - some genuinely useful advice for a change!

Call me a miserable tw*t but with Bulgaria and Romania joining in taking the bite of the UK cherry as well as growth in offshoring etc I wouldn't bet on it. I seem to remember doom and gloom about the economy for the last 20 years and it never really got better. The odd spike we had from time to time i.e. house prices, internet shares, easy lending were all short lived and came with a sharp kick in the nads shortly after. Just have to make sure you are good at what you do and batten down the hatches.

You have bought yourself a house though... feel sorry for your kids that won't be able to when they are your age!

Do a good stint there and then move back somewhere else to settle down. It isn't the place to really bring up a family in a swap for the UK IMO. More like an experience than a long term lifestyle. I wish I had done a longer stint out there rather than a couple of weeks here and there but I am damn sure I wouldn't be relocating their permanently, particularly just because the market is crap in the UK. I would need a hell of a lot more reason to emigrate there. Sounds ridiculous but in high summer I was more uncomfortable with the heat than I am with the cold over here. Hated that part.

This is a deal breaker for me, I am willing to swallow flights but not accomodation, a decent (and i mean european standard) two bedder in a finance centre can run you £25-35k per annum easy and in many countries this is paid upfront.
All the guys I know in Dubai still get those benefits. I had an interview with Etihad Airways and they would include accommodation in the deal.

Great for junior and mid-level roles, especially Citrix (law firms love Citrix) no good for senior roles unless someone pops their clogs or gets fired.

I would go to Dubai for a gig for the experience as it is a fabulous place but in it for the money and contract security? Forget that.

The idea that moving to the middle east is mega bucks died about 10 years ago. The rates over there all in are worse than here.

And try not to get a gig over their summer... hot doesn't come close to describing it.
