It´s easy to think "the UK is in a mess I´ll leave", but so is everywhere else.

Everywhere has got it's own issues but everybody I know who has move to Dubai is loving it and doesn't want to come back......

I am sure they are. It's an amazing place with so much going on but I would say it is a temporary place to work, not a change of life like Australia is for example. Do a good stint there and then move back somewhere else to settle down. It isn't the place to really bring up a family in a swap for the UK IMO. More like an experience than a long term lifestyle. I wish I had done a longer stint out there rather than a couple of weeks here and there but I am damn sure I wouldn't be relocating their permanently, particularly just because the market is crap in the UK. I would need a hell of a lot more reason to emigrate there. Sounds ridiculous but in high summer I was more uncomfortable with the heat than I am with the cold over here. Hated that part.

Just my personal opinion and I am a little older and don't fancy the jetset lifestyle as much anymore. If you have no family they I would say go now and do a couple of years. When kids come along chances to work somewhere exotic will evaporate completely and you will regret it.

And you have only been in a few years. Have a chat to some of the guys that were around in the heyday of contracting. The rates now are laughable compared to back in the day. I do believe this is a steady downward trend that we are going to have to get used to. Bobville has seen to that.

Thing is it's the same in other professions. Mrs NWP2C is a Pharmacist and rates have have come down to peanuts. Can we say for sure that things will continue this way or maybe the economy/business will finally get going again and demand will pick up?

Call me a miserable tw*t but with Bulgaria and Romania joining in taking the bite of the UK cherry as well as growth in offshoring etc I wouldn't bet on it. I seem to remember doom and gloom about the economy for the last 20 years and it never really got better. The odd spike we had from time to time i.e. house prices, internet shares, easy lending were all short lived and came with a sharp kick in the nads shortly after. Just have to make sure you are good at what you do and batten down the hatches.

You have bought yourself a house though... feel sorry for your kids that won't be able to when they are your age!

I would see it as a chance to embrace the experience together with the kids. We have just had a week out there, truly awesome experience and would relish the chance of a stint out there, which I think we could do. I just need to turn this from dream to feasible reality to making it happen. So will follow this thread with interest....

If you end up finding something in Abu Dhabi then you can still live in Dubai (Marina area) and it's about an hour's drive to get to Abu Dhabi airport (for Eithad jobs) add another 30 mins if you are in the City. Note that Dubai is more 'relaxed' than Abu Dhabi.
