malvolio replied to Recruitment for Security Cleared posts is a scandal - let's see if we can change thatin GeneralThat's been known for years. That's also been ignored for years. There is an active, advertised LinkedIn group called "DV and SC cleared people only" or some such set up years ago by an employee of S3 Group. I challenged him once - "It's what the client's demand" was the reply....

malvolio replied to Recruitment for Security Cleared posts is a scandal - let's see if we can change thatin GeneralCost us several 10ks of pounds in 2006. How much does one round table (there were many more than one meeting) with people like the head of GCHQ cost, do you suppose? Won't be any cheaper now.
But that's not the point. The issue is of agencies not adhering to the guidelines.

I kicked off a major push on this around 2006. We worked with the Cabinet Office to understand the rules around clearance (they are not laws, merely guidelines), to understand the financial impacts of drawing ministry resources from a limited (and often outdated) gene pool, and...

I think they are fading in the development arena, as people are moving to Agile (proper agile, not pretendy Scrummaging), they aren't really needed and the BA is the key interface.
But the linkage between users and IT services is still business critical and that is best done by a PM. I...

OK. As I said earlier, I lost one drive after a year or so. No lost data, no lost service. Two new disks bought, one installed and mirrored with the old working one, then the other new one installed the same way.
The NAS box is a Buffalo running Linux on a wired LAN configured with its...

Yet again, missing the point entirely.
One of those "VAX terminals" solutions ran a £100m semiconductor plant for 9 years at 100% service availability, just for one example....

I did say (if not very clearly!) that I was not up to date with cloud technology. All I was saying was there are potential; problems with using cloud storage and, as an aside, that I have some knowledge of the whole structure and practice of disaster tolerant systems, the basics of which haven't changed....

Or perhaps i was building high availability clustered mainframes in the 80s and 90s, including introducing RAID arrays and disaster tolerant services?
Just a thought......

Probably was then, had anyone taken any notice!
Mind you I had to deal with an irate MOD manager when his new server was running slowly. It turned out the ops were using the built in CD player to play Merlion albums (among other dross) and soaking up a chunk of system memory and marginal...

But still potentially fails my criterion for single file recovery...
Plus a local backup will avoid errors when your internet goes down or restarts in the middle of a process....

For once, we are in agreement. Setting up a local NAS is simple enough, after that it should just work.
For anyone using the cloud as prime storage, make sure you know how you recover a single file you have inadvertently deleted. It may not be as simple as you might think....

As i said earlier, the WIN11 update may be possible given the right bios settings, assuming you already have a fairly recent CPU and a decent amount of memory....

Depends how full your 2Tb partitions are. Using incremental backup from a roughly 0.75Tb dataset refreshed every 10 days keeps it tidy. Obviously I monitor disk occupancy.
If it gets close to the limit, there's lots I can archive to another removable HDD. Or I can update the backup disk,...

True, but you don't have to use more than one stripe...
Just fyi i was building RAID arrays in the early 80s. Old habits die hard!...

Faster LANs represent bandwidth and less contention as much as they do download speed, if that helps. Probably not significant for your purposes of course.
I've used a pair of 2Tb disks for many years, in a RAID 0+1 configuration for resilience (and double the read speed) with a separate...

Assming its not an antique, first check two bios settings, Secure Boot and TPM 2.0. Set them on and Win 11 is available. Might save replacing it......

I used Freeola.com for this kind of thing. Get the domain from them and the very basic website hosting and email is free. They also have a fairly good site builder, which might include most if not all of your requirement. There are bolt-ons as needed for the ore complex requirements, but they aren't...

We've explained that kind of thing many times before. Rather than enemy action it is far more likely to be different criteria for the before and after risk assessments - for example the old crew worried about GBH while the new crew care about financial probity. You will never know so no point in worrying...
