1. Sounds like total BS from the hiring manager. I have working in IBs for 15 years. Their technologists are generally decent but are nowhere near the best of the best.
2. I am also on a public sector contract. Teams are *way* too big for what is delivered. They are particularly heavy...

Interview Friday at a US bank I contracted for 2013-2017.
The rate is exactly the same as I was on in 2013 but inside IR35 and they want 3 days a week in the office which is not great.
I would net slightly more than my current outside contract but my thoughts are the longer...Last edited by TheDude; 3 February 2026, 13:12.

Had a couple of calls for banking roles on Friday. Rates not great but the banking sector has been dead for ages. Hopefully a few green shoots.

I know that but most look for a candidate with current clearance....

£750 and they will sponsor SC?
That is a spicy meatball! Well done....

I never thought of asking - I just assumed I wouldn't get a straight answer.
However in this market maybe it just isn't worth asking irritating questions when there is a long queue of people looking for work....

My son is in the final year of his A levels. He is adamant that he does not want to go to university.
Unless your are studying for a profession or science/maths then there is very little point in accumulating £50-£70k of debt.
'New' universities will close and degrees will...

Contractors have driven themselves to madness speculating on what sort of haircut their agent is applying.

I have had a lot of perm and contract roles at banks. They always check qualifications but have never asked to see certificates. They go directly to the university who presumably have people to deal with these requests.
In any case radio silence is the norm these days. It *may* mean they...

There are no recruiters posting photos of themselves on LinkedIn wearing bad suits/inappropriate dresses at industry events or at team drinks.
This tells you the sector is on its ass....

Five phone calls this week and two interviews arranged.
Green shoots or a blip?

Over the last week I have had a lot of approaches for public sector roles some that will even put the candidate up for SC.
Rates/salaries are OK and I am wondering if going the SC route may be worthwhile - Once obtained I assume this means one is automatically on an implicit approved supplier...Last edited by TheDude; 21 January 2026, 11:08.

I like to understand what the code I am putting my name to does.
I have no doubt AI can write code faster than I do but I still need to understand it....
