I have often found, that turning down more money, a better pension, better conditions is a great way to further my career. I mean, starting as a lowly private, rather than a second lieutenant, was a much better option. I can see why you did it. Officers can come out of the Army with decent pensions it is true, but as far as marketable skills go you are generally confined to managerial roles as opposed to anything specialised or technical.
I know this because my father left as an Officer. It was on his advice that I opted to go down a technical route, and it has worked out very well for me.
