Maybe they were going cheap because the numbers had been put on the wrong way round?

I put the wires on.

There was a good reason they were put on like that, you could turn the switch to position 1 or position 12 to turn the function off.

Not quite what I wanted for this though.

And amazingly, it now works to spec, within a millisecond or so.
