This evening's epic is "The Boys from Brazil(1978)" with Gregory Peck, Larry Olivier, James Mason.

The Boys from Brazil (1978) - IMDb

We're getting into remarkably advanced genetic engineering for 1978.

"If only you knew what I've seen with your eyes" sort of thing.

It was ok in its way.

It only needed a touch of Wagner's Valkyrie to give one the urge to annex the Sudetenland all over again again.

It's a curious that such a thing as cloning a long dead human could have been imagined to have happened in the mid 60s.

I'm not altogether sure it could be done these 50 years later.

The BP is down to 120/78 today.

Much lower & I'll be falling over getting out of bed again.

    was it so advanced?

Mengele, in the 1960s, had secluded several surrogate mothers in a Brazilian clinic and implanted them with zygotes each carrying a sample of Adolf Hitler's DNA preserved since World War II. Ninety-four clones of Hitler had then been born and sent to different parts of the world for adoption. In the hopes that one or more of the boys will turn out like the original Hitler, Mengele has arranged for all of them to be placed with foster parents similar to Hitler's own, and is assassinating their foster fathers at the same age at which Hitler's own died

Hans Spemann, a Germanembryologist was awarded a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1935 for his discovery of the effect now known as embryonic induction, exercised by various parts of the embryo, that directs the development of groups of cells into particular tissues and organs. In 1928 he and his student, Hilde Mangold, were the first to perform somatic-cell nuclear transfer using amphibian embryos – one of the first steps towards cloning.[22]

I was actually thinking the other day we saw how advanced the Germans were with rockets, jets etc. (which is why so many Germans got shiny new passports after the war).

Why if you had unlimited budget, no moral restrictions and a total obsessed nutter in charge why would you not be able to get there sooner? Especially if you just create a child with similar DNA not identical DNA.

    Its still an exceptional film.

'Spider-Man' Alain Robert scales London's Heron Tower - BBC News

A French urban climber, dubbed Spider-Man for his feats, has scaled one of London's tallest buildings without safety gear.
Alain Robert, 56, completed his bare-handed ascent of the 662ft (202m) building at 110 Bishopsgate - known as the Heron Tower - in 40 minutes.

I don't know really, it took A Lot Of Effort to clone Dolly the Sheep.

The major problem seems to be the imprinting of the DNA of the embryo.

It's what kills most of the experimental animals, the DNA is ok, but it's not turned off & on in the right places.

But I suppose, as you say, if you completely lack any moral judgment whatsoever, experimenting on humans would be just as easy as experimenting on sheep and you're bound to get one or two per hundred that sort of work right.

Anyway, tea was lentil <pfffft> soup, followed by stewed red gooseberries and custard.

This was delayed until about 19:00 due to needing a bonfire to get rid of the accumulated vanities and garden waste.

I got so hot that I had to peel my shirt off when I came back up to the house.

I don't know how much is left, but I suppose I'll find out tomorrow evening.

Maybe there's enough for Another Bonfire if it doesn't rain overnight.

The min temperature in the laundry room today was 4.9 degrees, so it continued to get colder after I'd left at 07:00 and it's only managed a max of about 11 deg. today.

This evening's tv was "World War Weird" followed by TBBT S12E2, which I found to be laugh out loud funny a couple of times.

Pleasant evening at the Django User Group London, aka DjUGL, including meeting a couple of erstwhile colleagues from Yahoo! and Capital Radio (as in, I worked with both of them at both places)

Now in the Harp, as one should be

Better get to sleep; I need to fully exploit the Premier Inn buffet before heading down to the conference, for those sausages won’t eat themselves

                Good morning all!

                Day 40 of permydom!

Bolton on't 'ill! It's dark, a bit blowy and not raining at the moment but it has been!

Finish at 13:00 today - which is nice!

Might even get the systems team to produce some customer requirements today - but I'm not going to hold my breath!

Have a good day all, and an even better weekend!

                  Morning denizens

                  Breakfast buffet has been raided

Some slight rosy fingering over in the direction of St. Paul’s, but it’s looking a bit cloudy out there all in all

Now to figure out what time to get to the conference so as to have time to grab coffee, but not so much time as to risk being drawn into conversation with some random attendee before the talks proper start…

                    Dark.

                    Dreary.

                    UnDry.

                    Sort of halfhearted rain.

Full moon, obscured by clouds in Neath.

Probably the smoke from my bonfire last night.

Sun hidden behind the murk over Margam.

No golden rays of light this morning.

                    Warmer.

                    Much warmer.

10 degrees vs 6 degrees yesterday.

And, best of all, thank the almighty & most merciful crunchy that it's Friday.

& just to celebrate the weekend I have another lurgy coming on.

So that's 2 weekends out of 8 since September & this evil building that I haven't had a lurgy.

                    Not that I'm counting.

                    Much.

The bonfire seems to have successfully rid me of a fairly vast heap of burny stuff, leaving a nice pile of ash.

Thankfully it was all pretty dry, and I timed it well since it rained last night.

I suspect a further bonfire may be pencilled in for November 5th, just to celebrate, like.
