At the (normally unmanned) station, the ticket machine had been supplemented with a man with a portable machine.
So rather than the zombified press button, insert card, type pin, I was required to have a conversation. He was wanting to sell ms#5 a "child", but as he is > 16, he is required to pay full fare. Man suggesting lots of ways to get cheaper fares (16-25 railcard being his preferred option), but none are actually valid for his school journey. So our 30 second ticket purchase became 5 minutes. Still, I'm sure the man got the warm glow one gets from having seemingly been helpful.
