Congratulations you just had your very own departmental Christmas present. You can't be an employee if they don't have a mutual obligation to offer work. If they argue against that then they grant you a path to employee rights and holidays by accident because they are now saying they have a control of your work practices because they determined working hours and stopped you working to your own time frame.
Even better if permanent employees were allowed to work...
