I have yet to contact Cascade as it is the weekend - however a quote from "Michael J Perry" does make sense.

If the admin's have no issue - would it be possible to update my account so I can get PM's, what I suggest is all people who are effected specifically by Cascade form a group (we can start a private google + hangout), so whilst it would be ideal if Cascade do the right thing if that fails then we can try and work together and get representation (as surely our situation must be very similar). I don't know about others but I also think it would be a good thing so we can chat about it with people who are in the same situation, I know for me its quite a heavy burden and I don't really want to talk to anyone who is going to give me the "I told you so" talk... so having some "friends" would help. Obviously don't want to do this too publicly on this forum as we know HMRC are surely going to be reading...

Big thanks to Michael J Perry and DonkeyRhubarb for being so active and helpful.

Cascade effected people - if you reply to the comment on this thread to say you want to join at least we can have a show of hands...

    Good luck to all...
    Hi all,

I know I'm a bit late to the party but I actually got my 2008/2009 notice today, via an accountant I haven't used for 5 years! Nothing to my home address though. Curious...

After the initial panic subsided I found this board and did my reading. I'll be contacting Cascade in the morning and will post up any assistance I get beyond that already listed here. Obviously I too now have a wife kids and a mortgage to worry about, and my earnings certainly haven't kept up with inflation, so this is something I'll be paying spectacular attention to. Certainly interested in joining a Cascade group though if you're out there...

I know I'm a new joiner, but if I can get PM's Id appreciate the opportunity to discuss this with other Cascade users.

    Many thanks!

Seminar on HMRC actions, EBT's and Tax Assessments/Enquiries/COP 8

Over the last few weeks, I have received an unprecedented number of phone calls and emails from worried and confused contractors about the 2008/09 further tax assessments, new HMRC Tax Return Enquiries (opened under Section 9A and Code of Practice 8) and Compliance Checks.

Many of you have appealed against the latest assessment and hope that the problem will now go away.

This will not happen, but there is likely to be a period of silence from HMRC before their next move.

You should use this time to understand the situation and the system you are dealing with, and what is likely to happen over the coming months.

You need clear, concise, correct and unequivocal jargon-free advice and answers to all your questions.

I therefore have a proposal (if Cojak thinks this is a permissible idea!)

        <mod snip>
This needs to be reviewed by Admin.

I've copied the text and will ask him to adjudicate on this.

        cojak.

<admin - I have reinstated this but see my comment here http://forums.contractoruk.com/hmrc-...ml#post1706568 />

If at least 10 contractors were prepared to hire a facility at a London hotel or one near Edgware, Middlesex where I am based, I would be able to provide a free seminar to all concerned followed by an open forum question and answer session (to be submitted in advance) and a brief one to one, if required.

There will be no sales pitch except to recommend that you appoint a properly qualified tax investigations specialist when you feel it may be right for you. This should be a member of the ICAEW, ACCA or CIOT.

If you can appoint one person to deal with me direct on this, as my practice is a little busy right now!

          Horizon

anyone else having trouble finding more details on the appeal from Horizon? I can get through to Julia as mentioned on here already who has been helpful, but cannot hold of Richard Scully. I have been informed that an appeal has been sent on my behalf, but cannot get confirmation of the actual appeal that was sent - or how it was sent. My deadline is coming up and i don't want to appeal separately but may have to if I cannot get confirmation that one has been lodged specifically for me, rather than the whole mass they are dealing with...

As above, Michael has offered to hold a seminar if enough of you are interested. As he has said, he will advise you that you should appoint a qualified tax investigations specialist when the time is right for you.

As has been pointed out many times, you need to do your own research on this, consult with the scheme provider where possible and take responsibility for the decisions you make.

We are not recommending you undertake the services of any tax specialist in particular, or even that you will need one - only you can individually make that decision as you know your circumstances more than any other.

The forum is here to support your quest for knowledge, understanding and the sharing of information. We hope that it provides support for you during this time.

Please do share your experience with us about any service you have received to help others make the right choices in the future.

There is no trace of this company and have found out they wound up voluntarily in 2010. So I am left either fighting it (and not knowing how without support from the company I used) or paying it the bill? It interesting the wording used in the letter saying the payments received as loans but they believe they relate to professional work and so are taxable. Doesn't sound like they are convinced what they are asking for...

I know it could come back and bite me and am a wiser person now and thankfully I only used it for a year and moved to a limited company, but something niggles me how its worded its almost like it is trying to scare me into paying rather than contesting it.

Anyone else through Talent Resource at this time and had one of these letters?

Yes in the same boat, what have you done, any advice from anybody would be great

                    Hey Tailor,

The advice at the moment is to grab one of the appeal letter templates on this forum and send it off asap via recorded delivery. After that, it's a case of waiting for HMRC to make the next move. Make sure you get your appeal within 30 days of the date stated on the HMRC letter.

I too have just received a letter about my time with TRM in 08/09 (it came yesterday), so it looks like they're sending them out on a staggered basis, probably to give themselves a bit of breathing space when everyone starts appealing.

Having spent a very informative couple of hours reading through everyone's posts I would just like to add my thanks to people like Michael, DR and Convict (and all others) who seem to be giving some intelligent advice.

I must admit to being rattled about this and after a sleepless night was preparing to take a (massive!) hit and give my life's savings to HMRC and then take out a loan to pay off the rest, but now I know I’m not alone I shall definitely be appealing based on Michael’s template (thanks again!).

If/when I receive any further information that hasn’t been posted I will let you guys know
