How much do professional fees usually cost for fighting a HMRC investigation

    Hi all,

If I get my legal cover to fight the msc investigation - do you know how much it would likely cost in professional legal fees?

    Regards,
    David

I am not sure anyone can tell you. Nobody knows if it will go beyond a first tier tribunal. If it does, the case could go all the way to the top and take a significant time to a final decision. Years.

You might get a guesstimate to take it as far as a first tier tribunal.

I was told many moons ago that an IR35 case could hit 6 figures.

By legal cover do you mean insurance? Or do you mean legal help?

You can appeal for free to begin with so hopefully you have done that then.

If you mean how much would a legal representative/tax lawyer/tax specialist cost well a tax specialist could go to HMRC to negotiate and to make direct contact but I think this thing has to be played out, first in a court, you could ask to be one of the cases going forward I suppose.

In which case your tax experts/lawyers may need to brief a barrister which would mean even more cost

However to answer you question if you meant legal help, you can expect your Tax Lawyers to start at around £150 an hour then depending on the level of skill you need rise to about £250 per hour. Real finger in the air stuff though.

Yep, if you hire decent legal representation, £100k is a typical ballpark for taking a case to the FTTT.
