I suppose it is beyond the limits of the bits of plankton lying between your ears to possibly conceive that maybe the UK might do some trade deals with the EU.

You can bet your bottom dollar that, if the UK were to leave, the EU would want to make to clear to others that might harbour the same thoughts that the costs would be prohibitive. Otherwise if you can have the benefit of trade without the costs of membership then everyone would do it, wouldn't they?
So yes I would expect punitive tariffs on our good and services.
The British market for German cars is quite big but has already been overtaken by China - the Germans will jump at the chance to put duties on Jags and LandRovers - which means Tata will simply have to move production to somewhere within the EU, as will Nissan, Mini, Honda etc. etc.

It won't do the british car industry any favours. Nissan, toyota etc are here because we are in the eu, they'll move. And don't think the eu will be any less self interested than we are towards the jocks i.e. they'll butt**** us if there is money in it. I mean, I cant imagine vag and daimler wanting to shut toyota and nissan out, can you?

The UK is a big market for European made cars but its not the only one and if EU countries decide to stick tariffs on UK built cars, if the companies decide to stay in the UK (it would be really bad if they left), and the UK puts tariffs on EU built cars then I'm afraid I can only see one loser here (*). Maybe the party who wants to go back in time could put reinvestment into canals in their manifesto





(* personally I think there wouldn't be tariffs put in place but if UK-EU started doing that, I think many businesses would be hit and I really think one of the UK's biggest: tourism, in particular)
