Regarding your last comment though, I know the meat I eat has a provenance - I get it from a local farm, I know the farmers and I know where it's slaughtered - at the local slaughterhouse in Frome which actually has an excellent welfare record as it has a very low turnover. Unfortunately a lot of the local slaughterhouses are being closed (I'm sure the EU is behind this but I can't remember how) with operations being moved to these large industrial scale processing plants where abuse does occur.
If I know somethings Halal, I will avoid it in case it hasn't been stunned. That said, I avoid all factory farmed meat anyway so will go for a vegetarian option when eating out.
