Ok so Russia has admitted it has invaded Crimea. Obama has said this would be deeply destabilising. Russia parked a big boat in Cuba (provocation).
Budapest memorandum has been called upon by new Ukraine PM.
Errrrm, can't help but think this is now every bit as bad as the Cuban missile crisis now.
Anyone think this will play out nicely? Or is this going the whole way now as I sure as Fook don't see Russia backing down.Knock first as I might be balancing my chakras.Comment

The most striking things about this so far for me was finding out one of the Ukraine's BOTN fighters (it is like competitive reenactment) has been killed whilst protesting, at the age of 22.
Apparently he was wearing his armour but found it did not stop a AK47 7.62mm round. He was chatting and lively when being treated by doctors but died te next day of internal bleeding.
This actually upset me more than everything else happening out there. I did not even know the guy, he was a friend of friend.Comment

Britain was ill prepared for war in 1939, it was even less prepared in 1938Originally posted by AtW View PostHistorically British (and French) behavior was irresponsible and emboldened Hitler to start World War - complete and utter failure of (I believe) Chamberlain's strategy. Good thing this country had Churchill to make up for it.
Would you view Chamberlain's strategy of averting war for another year as a positive allowing time to re-arm or do you think we should have declared war in 38?
The monthly output of Hurricanes rose from 26 in October 1938 to 44 in September 1939 and of Spitfires from 13 to 32 in the same period. The number of squadrons equipped with new aircraft had grown correspondingly.
October 1938 September 1939
Hurricane production 26 44
Spitfire production 13 32
The land defences against the bomber showed even better results. The monthly output of anti-aircraft guns increased from 56 in September 1938 to a monthly average of 85 in the last months of 1939. This rate was sufficient to increase the number of AA guns in service by a factor of four compared with October 1938. At the same time, their combined strength at the outbreak of war was only 1,650 anti-aircraft guns or about 50% of previously defined requirements.
Even more important achievement was the completion in 1939 of the most important line in anti-aircraft defence, the home chain of radar stations. How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't thinkComment

BBC News - Putin seeks Ukraine troop deployment
Oh dear. The Ukranians do have quite a big army. One wonders how they will react. While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'Comment

I would think the chances of them greeting them with a warm bowl of borsht and a glass of something warming are pretty slim.Originally posted by doodab View PostBBC News - Putin seeks Ukraine troop deployment

You're reading a lot of hyperbolic speculation more like. The Russians aren't going to nuke Crimea, they want to keep the place because it's strategically important to them, and US, France or the UK aren't going to unilaterally escalate someone else's conflict. I doubt you would even see NATO involvement in a conventional war unless it looked like they weren't going to stop at the border with Poland.Originally posted by suityou01 View PostI hope so. Maybe it is hyperbole. Ukraine gave up nuclear arms on the promise that the US and UK would step in should their borders have been breached. Their borders have now been breached. The Ukraine have asked us and the US to step in. Obama has said that any invasion would be costly. The Russians have parked a ship in Cuba.Originally posted by doodab View PostYou're reading a lot of hyperbolic speculation more like. Am I joining the dots up incorrectly in thinking we and the US could quite easily get sucked in and fast?Knock first as I might be balancing my chakras.Comment
