I disagree. You can thank labour, the trade unions and to some extent British industry's managers for setting Mrs Thatcher on you and everyone else. She was a crisis manager; she did what she had to do at the time it was needed, and some of it was ugly, and some of it was more than she had to do. In hindsight, which is easy, maybe she didn't need to cut so hard and maybe some of those shipyards and mines could have stayed open, but I remember 1979 and the litter piled up in the streets and I remember our neighbour, who was a self employed truck driver, first unable to work because of strikes and living off food we gave him and then getting injured in violent attacks when he broke picket lines to feed his own family. I remember my father collecting a new Rover that started falling to bits on the way home from the dealer, for the simple reason that it was built by people who didn't give a tulip. He replaced it with a second hand BMW which always ran. It should never have come to that situation.
