I didn't mention slavery, and white people enslaving other white people isn't exactly the same is it? -
The laws were put in place because people, left to their own devices, are not very good at dealing with minorities or people different to themselves. I'd love to say that, socially, we're at a point where these things don't need to be written in law, but we most definitely are not. I live in an area with some racial tension and could easily imagine seeing certain signs on shops.Originally posted by NotAllThere View PostAllowing people to decide who they will serve and who they will not does not have to immediately revert to that condition.Comment

Sorry, I was responding not to the original point, but to the blanket "I can refuse to serve who I like" statementOriginally posted by eek View PostThat's not the question here. If you require specialist equipment that has greater running costs should the company be required to offer the same higher optional discount when that specialist equipment is provided due to being required..Comment

That's not the same at all - firstly, the "discrimination" is based on the purchased item and not the customer and secondly, the "discrimination" is easily fixed by grabbing a second member of staff. Personally, I think it's pretty daft to take a job where you're clearly going to be handling items you don't agree with but if M&S want to cater for that then that's fine.Originally posted by Platypus View PostComment

I thought disability living allowance was provided so as to cover the extra expense of living with a disability. If that is the case why are firms forced not to make any financial adjustment in costs for disabled people?Comment

It's PC gone mad IMO.
When they took the job did they say at interview " I won't be able to handle alcohol or pork products" ?: If handling these products was a requirement of the role then they were not suitable for the role : regardless of the reason (the premise remains the same for non religious / cultural reasons: ie an allergy)
Religion/race/sexual orientation is a handy "get out of jail free card" all too readily thrown out nowadays.
The " it's cause i's black innit " sketch should be replaced by " it's cause i's gay or muslim innit " sketch

Because it wasn't a discussion about slavery, until you brought it up.Originally posted by vetran View Postwhy is it not what difference does colour make to slavery?Comment

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is the new benefit that has replaced DLA for working age adults with a disability. As with DLA, PIP is designed to help you meet some of the extra costs you may have because of a long-term health condition or disability.Comment
