Personally I think there are far more effective forms of discipline than smacking - removal of favourite toy or attention.

In MrsBP's case I remove her rabbit or sexual favours.

It's of little consequence the local rugby team tell me.

Well that implies I subscribe to the view that kids should not be spanked on the basis of other people holding to the idea; I am not aware of it being 'mainstream' or vogue or whatever, and it is certainly not why I hold to it. I don't hold to ideas simply because others believe them. If I did I'd be an ardent social democrat shrieking about the horrors of capitalism and the coming doom of AGW.

A smack on the hand of a 3 year old poking a screwdriver into a plug socket is arguably more effective in preventing the child's death than saying "That behaviour is inappropriate, sweetie".

Or grabbing it and pulling it away and making sure it doesn't get access to sockets or screwdrivers again, since the parent is ultimately responsible for its well-being. That's different to spanking the kid on a regular basis though.

So how would you differentiate? An occasional smack is OK, a regular smack isn't? How often is occasional?

anyone who smacks more than he does is a sadistic moron, anyone who smacks less than he does is a namby pamby , wishy washy, airy fairy , arty farty gob sh!te

i.e. he has got it just right, and everyone else should just darn well listen. and obey

You're referring to an intervention to stop the child from bringing harm to itself. In that scenario, using force to prevent it from doing so is perfectly justifiable. That's the basis I am differentiating on.
