Mary if you have a Wii, PS3 or XBox360, these all support Netflix already but your games console will have to be connected to the internet. Most/all can do so by WiFi.

It's possible your TV might also have Netflix if it's a "smart TV" - do you know if it is? In this case you would have to make sure your TV is connected to the internet.

The easiest other option is just to plug a video-output cable from your laptop to the TV, just like people do when using their laptop with a projector or large screen in meetings. If your laptop has HDMI this will be easiest as you probably just need a single HDMI cable (£5) but many laptops do not have HDMI, only VGA. You can still get a cable as your TV almost certainly has a VGA-in (look at the back and see), but you will then need a 2nd cable for sound... in my experience this gets a bit messy.

You can also buy a "smart TV box" which is essentially just a very simple PC in a small box, which connects to the internet and plugs into the back of your TV. Google just released a new product called ChromeCast which looks like a USB dongle only with an HDMI connector instead... you just plug it into your TV and it lets you view stuff like Netflix/iPlayer. These cost about £25.

In my experience, using a laptop, while technically fine, is a PITA and I would recommend you buy a little magic box to do the same job without you having to balance the laptop on a stool next to the TV, which is what we end up doing, and means you can still use the laptop at the same time as the TV.

I think checking to see if her TV has a sticker with "Smart TV" or something on is probably within her abilities.

A better one would be to ask her the model number of her telly and one of us could google the appropriate instructions for her.
