True but it is only a perk so even if they say no you are back to where you expected to be.. the rest of it still stands. Decent car that isn't an accident waiting to happen.

Actually KSI are now much lower across all age ranges. I suspect that the insurance companies are just much happier quoting very high premiums to younger drivers.

Car safety is also much higher so despite writing off their car and probably a £10-20K car they hit most drivers walk away.

Costs for repairing cars have also gone up compared to 30 years ago as painting technology has changed and spare parts have become a serious revenue stream. Also the car sacrifices itself for the safety of the occupant, so the Volvos with train tracks for bumpers are replaced with cars with eggshell bumpers.

There is also the fact medical science has moved on and more people are saved/fixed.

        and

it seems all accidents have followed the trend.

OK there have been minis and bubble cars in the past, but I was talking about the typical economy car.

That was my impression, seeing as manufacturers have a strong incentive to increase efficiency.

The average economy car has increased in weight.

Indeed - the materials and construction may be far lighter, but the cars are also far larger in the same class. Fiesta is a good example.

                WHS - daughter's was about £1800.

Down to a slightly less eyewatering, but still painful £500 now she's 20 with two years NCD

Unless he's mechanically minded, a 1K car is likely to cost a lot more than a 3K car.

Well that will pay for a third to half of his insurance!

The obvious choice is something old, reliable with a small engine. :-)
