Of course knowing his favourite uber-cool uncle sasguru is a whiz about cars , he's asked me for advice.
      What do the panel think?
Seeing as his insurance will be about £700 and his tax £200, he's really looking for a £100 car.

but whatever you go for make sure it was cheap and simple to start with so there will be less to go wrong.

just go to autotrader and look for stuff under a grand - clio 1.2??
clios even when new were as unreliable as can be, try harder than that!

I can't see how buying a french/italian car can be a good idea? Stick to German/Japanese so you can learn how to drive properly rather than what to do when it breaks down every 10 minutes.

Just make sure he remembers that the insurance will probably cost close to a grand as a youngster even for an impossibly slow car

Whatever he goes for his insurance will be far more than the car is worth.

It would probably work out more economic to find a dealership that is peddling free three years of insurance with their small cars...

I know one of them was doing a just add petrol deal...

Insurance for 18 year old will very likely be more like £2K.

I reckon I might pay his insurance, if its not ginormous.
He's not stupid, flattering me by asking for advice.
                    Good lad, though

Am I the only one to point out that the insurance will be very expensive?
