I suggest calling yourself an estate agent might make you sound better.Originally posted by Jeff Maginty View PostI am a classic Computer Programmer type personality. I can call myself a Software Developer to sound slightly more cool (alright, I mean slightly less geeky)
Personally I call myself a test pilot. -
Nope, not me Jeff. I'm the complete opposite; in fact you may regard me as a bit of a charlatan as I only got into this lark for the moneyOriginally posted by Jeff Maginty View Post"IT people are overly wedded to logic". Discuss...
I am a classic Computer Programmer type personality. I can call myself a Software Developer to sound slightly more cool (alright, I mean slightly less geeky), but fundamentally I am a massive introvert and extremely rational with an under-developed sense of humour. I hate to resort to a trekkie reference, but think: Mr Spock.
I do think that IT people, at least programmers, are generally of a certain personality type. What does thou reckon?
And while I'm not earning me crust I'm out there high rolling the local fruitees and doing some very un-geeky things which normally result in 2 knee shaped dents on the bonnet of me motor

I have observed that a large number of people in IT- especially on the technical side exhibit some levels of behaviour from the autism spectrumOriginally posted by Jeff Maginty View PostI do think that IT people, at least programmers, are generally of a certain personality type. I took part in some personality typing (myer-briggs) of IT types. The majority were ISTJ, but a significant minority were INFP. Interestingly the INFP were the people who build robust, maintainable, nicely designed code. They were the ones the business could communicate with. The people conducting the test (and this was carried out three times in different groups), were surprised there were any INFPs, as this type is general associated with writers and other creative people.
The ISTJs were the hackers. They'd get things working - even brilliantly. They'd get the job done, quickly and to spec. But design wasn't their strong point. Nor interpersonal skills.
Of course, these are just indicators and preferences.Down with racism. Long live miscegenation!Comment

Most programmers who work in IT have the equivalent personality of Dustin Hoffman in Rainman.Originally posted by Troll View PostI have observed that a large number of people in IT- especially on the technical side exhibit some levels of behaviour from the autism spectrumWhat happens in General, stays in General. You know what they say about assumptions!Comment
