Yep. But it stems from the whole "own a house and you've made it" theory - most countries measure their economic prosperity by GDP or GNP or some such economic measure, whereas the UK measure it on house prices.

And the simple way to boost that is to have next to no cheap property available.

Couple that with a perception that living in the UK is great, and we get to the mess that we are in these days.

How much UK tax do you pay these days?

Erm, quite a lot actually due to investment income in the UK. Certain types of income are taxed in the country where they're earned, others are taxed where you reside, others you can choose where to pay tax under dual taxation treaties. Long story to do with taxation treaties, ever so boring, so I leave it to the accountants.

of course I'm prepared to believe the Standard and even government sources might be a bit right wing but the Graunaid and the Independent also seem to believe the majority of tenants are illegal migrants.The Guardian did manage to include 'due to the benefits cap' which made me grin.

Sorry Mitch you are talking round spherical objects. They are relevant, however I suspect the situation is so bad (6000 properties) they want to keep quiet about the residents immigration status.

It'll be interesting to see what the council do next. Will they go around all 6000 sheds and investigate them? Will they be building a little camp for all the illegal immigrants while they're being checked out? Will they provide housing for those who aren't illegal? Will they all move to sheds in Swindon?
