Hence I said pay a bit more......

I can now see that a used 5 series is a lot cheaper than 3

Going to have a look at this one a little later on just to give me an idea of what I can get for my money:

      BMW 3 SERIES 330d M Sport 4dr Auto Diesel Saloon 3.0 2006
I don't think there is any point trying to discuss as you were dead set on it being a BMW 5 for ride/comfort and wouldn't consider anything else and now you are going for a 3 sport? Ride and comfort? What happened to that. You are just getting giddy and looking at cheap flash cars now and are going to end up in the world of grief that comes with them. Personally I would have considered an higher mileage road eater but a 100K miles sports car. Not a chance.

The bit more you are paying for is it being higher spec, looking pretty and being more marketable, not more reliable, better maintained etc

BTW Check the exhaust on that one. Is that a standard one?

        ?
WHS. You're one of the brainwashed masses who think a BMW is the best thing since sliced bread.
Nice cars, good performance but average reliability even when newish.
And you want to get a knackered one
        Hard Brexit now!

            timing chain failure from 2007 to 2011 on 118d 120d 320d 520d | Prestige

We are all used to cherishing the notion of a perfect design from German car manufacturers. German car makers set the standard that others simply aspire to. Yet it comes as a surprise that the car giant bmw could get an engine design wrong? The BMW diesel engines n47d20a and n47d20c produced between 2007 and 2011 all have a particular design problem with the timing chains, they are very weak and stretch over time causing them to then snap, when the chain snaps the inlet and exhaust valves collide with the pistons, resulting in massive engine failure, at this point it will bend all 16 valves, shatter the rocker arms, snap and distort both camshafts and the camshaft housing, this is on this particular engine a very large job to put right as the timing chains are at the back of the engine and it’s an engine out and complete strip down to rectify. The parts required to rebuild are expensive as you would expect from BMW! Not to mention the price of the new modified chains, guides and tensioners. However if your timing chain has snapped then you will require a full rebuild which we can carry out for you at a cost of £2500 including of parts, we have been building these engines for the last three years and have now done in excess of one hundred engines be it the 120 d 118d 320d, 330d, or 530d

As NWP2C is looking for a 2004 car a problem that occurred between 2007-11 isn't going to be much of a problem for him.

It would be money well spent to use the AA checking service and get them to have a look over it as well. They do a very detailed report.

The thing to bear in mind with flash older cars going cheap is that they are cheap because they are expensive to run even if nothing major goes wrong with them.

Given that it will cost you money whatever you buy, you may as well enjoy it and get one of these.

Not necessarily true - a guy at work bought a 3 series 33d M Sport at 100k and sold it at 125k and didn't spend much on it at all......
