Get a folding bike. You can buy a company bike.

Out of interest which ear phones do you use/recommend?

I have a pair of Sennheiser 202's, very nice and at the lower end of their range so if you want to spend more I'm sure those are even better.

I have these. Massive base and very clean mids and highs. Quite impressive for a single driver in-ear buds. Pretty decent sound isolation as well. Use them all the time on trains.

I'd get a Brompton, you can put them in the bottom luggage racks and under your desk at work.

They look a bit crap though and not the easiest to ride. I aint the fittest so if its hard to ride it'd be tough.

My foldup was £200 from decathlon - 3 years later is still going strong on over 100 miles a week. On 2nd pair of types.

You shouldn't get an expensive bike to pop down to the dole office, someone is likely to nick it while you are in there.

If it helps, I'm doing my first contract, driving 110 miles there and 110 miles back everyday, about 1 hour & 45 mins each way. Driving is less hassle, comfort & convenience of your own space/car as opposed to pissing around with catching trains and buying tickets everyday. (Not to mention Layering up with hats boots and coats in the winter!)
