If that happens I'd move to lerwick! I went to Sullom Voe a few times when I was a student. In the winter its a truly miserable place. I recall sitting in the office as the rain was flying past the window almost horizontally and in the gloom that passed for mid day you could see the sea being blown up over the road and a dirty great oil tanker slowly making its way out to sea. I was there on the longest day of the year also and it does not go dark!

As Mitch points out who says they are? The independence vote is a game changer.

The Malvinas are UK territory. They have voted to not be part of Argentina. Jersey & Isle of man are independent.

The UK Islanders could quite reasonably argue they don't want to be part of a separate Scotland. They are entitled.

Just as the English should be able to vote on Scottish Independence. After all we will be affected and probably told to fund it.

Yep, they're also not 'in Scotland' as proggy suggests. Orkney is close to the coast of Scotland, Shetland is about halfway to Norway, and AFAIK they were previously a part of Norway and maintain a lot of Nordic culture. They have no reason to wish to be part of Salmondland and every reason to choose a future on their own or with the UK or Norway. And every right to do so IMO.

Within the UK Scotland can vote to become independent. Northern Ireland can vote to leave the UK and become a part of the Republic, or even go independent. That's democracy; you want out, you're allowed out. What, precisely, makes Orkney different? What makes their democratically expressed wishes less valuable than those of people on the mainland?

Remember, it's you, Mr Salmond and your nationalist chums who are initiating the break up of a sovereign state, and not some large group of people in England or in Orkney; if you have the right to do that, and you do, then so do others.

Erm, who the hell are you to decide for other people what constitutes their country? Do you think San Marino, Monaco, Andorra and Liechtenstein should be taken over by some other, larger state just because they happen to be small? Sounds rather like fascism to me. Remember, in comparison to many other countries, your beloved Scotland is pretty puny too. You want to play games of 'we're bigger so we'll decide for you'? Hey? You want the English to do that too?

Although it looks more and more like it won't actually be Scotland; it'll be the People's Democratic Republic of Salmondia, and we all know what 'People's Democratic Republics' are like.
