Nope, they are part of Scotland first, and Scotland is in union with the U.K.Originally posted by DodgyAgent View PostThey are not part of Scotland they are part of the UK so they are as much attached to England as they are to ScotlandComment

Fair enough, but if Scotland have the right to vote for separation from the larger union then so do the Shetland and Orkney islands.Originally posted by proggy View PostNope, they are part of Scotland first, and Scotland is in union with the U.K.Let us not forget EU open doors immigration benefits IT contractors more than anyoneComment

and here is why......Originally posted by DodgyAgent View PostThey are part of Scotland
King Christian I of Denmark (Denmark owned Norway then) gave Shetland and Orkney to Scotland as a dowry (wedding present) to Margaret of Denmark (his daughter) marrying James III, King of Scots.
So Scotland brought them into the Union and Scotland will take them out again should the vote go that way.
Ain't historical fact a bitch DA?

As do the Isle of Dogs, the Isle of Grain, The Scilly Isles, Wapping, Yorkshire, and god knows who else. But it is unlikely to happen as most shetlanders spend their life so pissed they would not know how to mark an "X" on a ballot paper.Originally posted by DodgyAgent View PostFair enough, but if Scotland have the right to vote for separation from the larger union then so do the Shetland and Orkney islands.“The period of the disintegration of the European Union has begun. They are already talking about home rule. It's a matter of time. While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'Comment

The Irish "talked" about Home Rule for hundreds of years, and still have not quite got there. And they have the cojones to want to fight for it too. I suspect most Shetties could be bought off for a half bottle of Bells and a four-pack of Harp Lager.Originally posted by doodab View PostThey are already talking about home rule. None of that is a reason why they or any other tiny island couldn't operate as a country, which was the assertion I was disagreeing with.Originally posted by shaunbhoy View PostI think the fly in the ointment might be that neither Orkney or Shetland actually ARE an island nation. No more than the Isle of Wight is anyway. They are simply a part of Scotland and have no more right to vote for their own independence than people that live on the Isle of Sheppey!!While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. it was pawned.Shetland was pledged by Christian I, in his capacity as King of Norway, as security against the payment of the dowry of his daughter Margaret, betrothed to James III of Scotland. As the money was never paid, the connection with the crown of Scotland has become perpetual.Comment
