I have a rule of thumb about these things. If a country calls itself 'democratic republic' it'll probably be ruled by a family of despots. If someone says 'honest, mate', he's probably lying so if a newspaper calls itself something generally seen as positive, like 'Independent', well, it says enough.

Good quote from Yes Prime Minister...

              "Who's in charge?"
              "The peoples' democratic republic"
              "So a communist dictatorship then"
              "Yes"
