    Too true.

I have decided to drivel in detail on my exercise regime in tpd. And just provide a summary here.

That is how I understand it, but obviously am not a food scientist.

Anyone got any ideas of this carbs theory?
Nonsense. All fats, proteins and carbs get stored as fat if you don't use them as energy.

Most food whether processed or nature contains a mixture of food molecules. So a chips and potatoes aren't just carbs.

It's actually easier for your body to store fat and protein as fat than carbs. Anyone who has done biology A level and above knows this.

All the various low carb and other diets work simply because they are a way to make you consume less calories. This is now common knowledge thanks to the Atkins Diet.

People are told to avoid potatoes as they will use it as an excuse to eat chips which are high in fat. (I found this out from news articles) People are told to avoid bread because shop brought bread in the UK is high salt.(I found this out years ago when working abroad on why the bread tasted different. )

If you have lots of muscle from doing exercise your body needs more energy while at rest so if you eat a carb meal at night it will not have a bad effect. In fact not eating enough carbs in the afternoon/evening if you are doing endurance exercise will make you feel ill especially if the only time you can exercise is the morning. Anyone who does endurance sports and has to train in the morning to fit things in knows this bit.

Too true, I've seen one too many people in the gym who constantly diet, don't eat properly to compliment their exercise regime and they end up with that sinewy look where the body's muscle mass has started to break down.

Very interesting post - and I agree with alot of what you say. I reckon if you eat carbs it gets stored as carbs on the muscles where it is ready to be used. Hence carb loading before events.

BUT its slightly different for someone like me who needs to lose weight. Over Autumn I put on 6kg I need to lose urgently. But you can't lose fat quickly! So I have to be careful what I eat.

PERSONALLY I have found that removing bread and potatoes seem to make me lose weight better. If training I still need carbs so I take rice/pasta.

When I was losing weight prior to training I was off carbs for 6 months! Great way of losing weight.

But maybe thats what they want? All the people who do iron man in less than 10 hours are very very skinny.

Personally I am not training to look good. I keep seeing adverts for getting tri ripped and even Dallas made some comment the other day about getting a v shape. I don't care about that. I don't care about speed. I just want to see how far my body can go in terms of distance. I would still love to do a deca-man!(10 iron men in 10 days).

BTW Dallas has pointed me towards 2 Swim 4 Life - you swim 24 miles in 24 hours! 26th April 2013. Might make a good warm up for the double iron man.

One issue is that you need a "swim buddy" - I am highly unsocialable and don't like stuff where I have to associate with other people.

          DEcisions decisions.....

I think there is a bit of a difference between a finely tuned athlete like yourself, and a lardy like me, what works for you won't work for everyone.

I have been dying with a cold for the last few days so the healthy eating has been out of the window, although my Nike Fuelband turned up yesterday so that is supring me on to see how active I can be.

If you are doing heavy duty training then I would suggest speaking to a nutritionist who can advise you properly rather than making it up as you go along.

I am a long long way off being even a poor athlete. My body shape is all wrong. I still have too make weight.

The only difference between myself and any other very bad athlete is training. I have a big advantage living 12 miles from work so its a cycle commute. And access to swim pool and somewhere to run(hyde park) at lunchtime. But just a few hours a week will all the difference to EVERYONE! YOU can do it!

Vitamin C and echinacea to stop you getting colds in the future. Get well soon!

I have found even having one every 2 years is a help - but every year is ideal.

I have put on about 5 pounds over the holidays despite running quite a bit, 75 miles in 5 days this last week alone. So I might be using 120 calories for a mile and 3500 extra calories puts on a pound that is some amount of food I went through. Loved every minute I must say.
