We're paying £2K a month for childcare, if you had a big mortgage on top of that it would certainly use up a big chunk of cash.
We spend £8,500 a year on the mortgage
I agree, mortgage can be a killer, but in this case, it's just another opinionpaper jerkfest...

I am no where near what others would consider well off but the kids know if we don't have the money it doesn't get spend, but that doesn't mean the kids are stuck at home, lots of things can be done cheaply or even free, so when we do treat them its not a problem

Have found some good local wine merchants that sell good wine from small vineyards.

Will probably stock up next year when we get round to buying a place.

I'm just teasing the non-expat brigade with the price of wine here in NL. Germany's even cheaper.

          This lot aren't very cheap but they deliver good rieslings from their own vineyards to your house; for some reason good Pfalz rieslings are difficult to find in NL;

            its interest only !

we earn less than that yet have bigger mortgage payments (we overpay) but no childcare.

£1000 a month for food and bog roll etc seems reasonable

Energy & utility seems very high (suspect a big Sky subscription in there).
Four bedroom house with 6 young & 2 older kids (wife is a childminder) is £1800 heat & power.
Child minding part time (primary school) would be about £5 per hour per child. Many schools though have reduced cost end of class to 6pm provision.

Agree with simonmac and MIT, some people just want to waste money on expensive outings, new cars etc and it really isn't necessary in order for kids to have a decent life.

We spend £8,500 a year on the mortgage, £4,500 on utilities including energy and the phone, £12,000 on groceries, £2,500 on insurances, £2,500 on council tax and £3,600 on loan repayments.
I find some of those figures ridiculous. £2500 on insurance? £4,500 on utilities??? Anyone here spend that sort of dosh on those?

                    I think we spend about:

£500-600 per month on grocery shopping 2 adults and 2 children.
£200 maybe on utilities (rounding up)
£800 on a mortgage (rounding up)
                    £150 on our Vodaphone package
                    £100 on the Virgin package
                    £100 on insurances
                    £200 on loan repayments
£260 on childcare (although this will shoot up soon)

                    Total approx £2410
Include 10% margin of error: £2651

And I thought we were overspending!
