Web services - anyone heard of this?

I had to change some web service code just there, add a drop down to an existing html form that sends an extra attribute to an existing web service.

20 fookin' files I had to check in there.

Why didn't you replace it with a common library to reduce the effort?

Anyone heard of this concept. Currently reviewing technical design documents which seem to talk a lot about them. Are they a 'thing' or is this just developer waffle.

I think this will sound quite ranty...

IT already uses jaxb and cxf to build many of the classes automatically from the xsd file change and the wsdl file change, all that should be required is a change to the jsp to display the extra drop down, the mvc action to trap the added attribute and a service class change to ping the added field down the pipe, add to that a couple of mods to unit tests. Instead I have to change multiple interaces and impl classes going through the multiple spring layers before I get to call the service.

So I can explain that to management who are untechnical at which point I have to explain to them that I should rewrite 6 month old greenfield code ( wait for it ) handed to me by an offshore team. Frankly I have no wish to enter into a debate of opinions when I will be out the door soon. I had to justify why the task took so long already and nobody wanted to hear my reasons.

I was referring tongue-in-cheek to the OPs statement:
