The fact is, we simply dont know. The people who claim they DO know would have been selling snake oil in previous times

I understand that, and apologies, but I am a layman on the subject, but if global warming did start to occur, would it not melt the caps, and shift the gulf stream, from where it is proven we experience weather we shouldn't?

If the seas dropped down a notch, would it make sense that the gulf stream would shift, as, accordingly, would our temperatures? Or is it palpable nonsense?

I don't pretend to know, or have an opinion, but I am interested in the subject.

why would global warming melt the ice caps ?
how much heat would we have to pump onto the planet to melt the ice caps ? if you get an ice cube at -40c and heat it massively to -38c
it's not going to melt is it ?

you have to understand one crucial fact. global warming through carbon dioxide alone, will not cause any problems. even the die-hard eco loons accept that.
Their claim is that a slight warming via co2 will trigger a much worse green house gas to multiply - water vapour

and that is what the debate is all about. In scientific circles its known as positive feedback leading to a tipping point

        the rest is just propoganda

Whilst I would agree that it is important for us to look after our environment I see more clearly the need for people to live out their own prejudices in the name of "the environment". You are indeed one such individual. I reckon you are driven more by a dislike of people's mobility (I am with you on this we should never have mobilised the proletariat) and the fact that you cant afford a car yourself. There is little if any actual hard proof that man is causing climate change, or if he is it is significant enough to make any difference.
You and your ilk seem to think people are stupid enough to be intimidated by your exaggerated assertions.

Of course it could well be that you are right but because you seem to target anything that hints at wealth with a clear leftie agenda you may well be trivialising what is actually a very serious matter.

You then can take responsibility if the world comes to an end.

There was never a serious suggestion that the AMOC was going to stop, that's just one of EO's Straw Men, though it may slow down - if you care, the science is here: Climatic Change, Volume 82, Numbers 3-4 - SpringerLink

But one counter-intuitive result of GW and the rapidly disappearing Arctic icecap is NH winters with higher snowfall... from the abstract of a recent PNAS paper

Moreover, the increase in atmospheric water vapor content in the Arctic region during late autumn and winter driven locally by the reduction of sea ice provides enhanced moisture sources, supporting increased heavy snowfall in Europe during early winter and the northeastern and midwestern United States during winter. We conclude that the recent decline of Arctic sea ice has played a critical role in recent cold and snowy winters.
Our sceptical friends should like this paper, its co-authored by their favourite climatologist.

The problem you have is that the harder you try the sillier you look and the less seriously people take you. As I say Mr PJclarke your assertions are about you not climate change.

That seems pretty significant. What's causing it to be so anomalously icy?

Tell me about it. It took me half an hour to dig the Range Rover out of the garage.

but the facts are, the northern ice cap is a bit down
the southern ice cap is a bit up
