They seem to be well suited. Assange needs Ecuador for something to hide behind. Ecuador neers Assange for a bit of international posturing.
Is right, a South American country trying to play the Human Rights card, who'd have believed that!?

That said, hague has clearly dropped one here with that letter to the ecuadorians 'telling' them of the 1987 law that the UK Government could remove the ambassadorial status of the embassy. Still, never one for a softly, softly approach was he?

It's a tricky one. On the one hand - it seems there's a case to answer re the rape accusation. On the other hand there's obvious politicking going on because he was one of the WikiLeakers. On the gripping hand, he's an arrogant, egotistical smeghead with delusions of adequacy and a messiah complex.*

Send him to Sweden is my vote.

Uh-oh - he knows all the CUK secrets! The AndyW file, Dodgy's rate, The CUK banning policy, The Sockie list, MF's sled stockpile location, louie's questionable parentage, Chef's recipes, BrilloPad's mumsnet login...

        etc etc

I tend to agree with those who dislike Assange. I don't think there's anything clever or that much to be benefitted from leaking what were mostly private documents. Calling it "shining a light on Gov't" grossly exagurates what Wikileaks did IMO.

Should he be questioned over the allegations made against him - probably yes. Though why the Swedish authorities weren't/aren't prepared to do that at the embassy I don't know. It's not as though the Swedes haven't already set a precedent for such.

But I don't see how Sweden can 'guarantee' he might not be extradited to the US ? If the Americans produce sufficient evidence and guarantee he won't face any death penalty, then the Swedes might be hard pushed not to extradite him.

Originally I thought our very own FO were trying to help Assange by threatening the Ecuadorian embassy. But alas I fear the UK Gov't were genuine in their desire to extradite Assange to Sweden. I fear, not because of Assange's plight, I fear because I just can't believe how incredibly inept the FO was to make such a stupid threat. A threat which was always going to backfire on them where Assange's asylum application was concerned. Not to mention help solidify South America's attitude against the Brits, particularly where the Falklands is concerned. And now the UK's attempted back-tracking over the embassy threat makes me cringe even more than Assange's self righteous posturing.

Why do we employ such dimwits at the FO - they posess all the diplomatic talent of rabid dogs. I think heads should roll at the FO for being such blatantly stupid idiots.

I believe Mr Hague overruled those in the FO who told him while we have this 1987 law (thanks to the actions of Libya in killing one of our police women) we can't use it or threaten to use it.

Well 'Yes Minister" was based on real life.

All the ex-civil servants and ex-ministers who were interviewed on a BBC4 documentary (which is randomly on) admitted the stuff was true

The problem is the civil servant who put the paper in Mr Hague's red box didn't highlight the words "DON'T USE THIS' about that particular law.

My problem with this is that I don't trust the Swedish one little bit.

The other thing that Assange addressed was that within the EU there are few or no rights to refuse extradition to another EU country.

                    Think about that one carefully.

What!? Sweden are one of the most neutral countries in the World never mind Europe.

As for extradition between EU states, I think you'll find there are virtually no rights of refusal.

But frankly, assange plays by the sword so he should be prepared to take the consequences. He's no shining beacon for free speech or independence. Hi 'wikileaks' organisation (even nicked that name from somewhere else!) just wants to de stabilise the world not, make it more stable.

I hope he enjoys his time holed up in his office come apartment at his new friends gaff. He's certainly going to be there for some time.
