At some point in the future Ecuador will be pressured into kicking him out. A trade deal will be used as leverage or something similar, maybe a change of government.

Wallander will get his man.

Or he's an egotistical meglomanic that loves being lorded and worshipped over - and being a champion for "openess and transparency" is one way for him to achieve this - and it has worked in spades.

But I just can't escape the impression that he is one nasty piece of work masquerading as a freedom fighter for openness.

I got that impression from the conflict he managed to have with some of the people and organisations that had supported him.

FTFY.

I see his latest farrago of legal casuistry is that, if the UK doesn't let him go to Ecuador, he'll appeal to the International Court of Justice. Somebody needs to tell him that he can't actually do that, not being a nation state

Still, it may be a mixup in translation: that came from his Spanish lawyer. The one who was disbarred earlier this year

Here's another excellent blog post on the subject by a lawyer: Assange.

One particularly good point, which ought to be obvious but completely escapes the Assangistas: "It is perfectly possible to support Wikileaks and the principles it stands for, whilst seeing Julian Assange as an individual to be judged on his own merits. Why is that so controversial or difficult to grasp?"

No one has picked up on the strategic element here.
We may be able to defend the Falklands from Argentina

but a three pronged attack, where the Argies are supported by a marine llama corps (armed with the alpaca death stare) from Equador, supplied by intel from 'bum sucker' Assange, is an altogether different prospect

Americas bloc takes UK threats to Ecuador for international discussion — RT

British threats to invade Ecuador’s embassy will be discussed at international-level talks between the foreign ministers of the Organization of American States. The proposal was adopted despite the US saying OAS has nothing to do with the issue.

Ecuador called for an emergency OAS meeting after it received a memorandum from the UK that included a threat of an assault on the country’s London embassy to arrest WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who was seeking political asylum there, if he is not handed over to the British authorities. The contents of the letter were revealed the day before Ecuador publicly announced its decision to grant Assange political asylum.

I'm waiting for the leaked cable about how the CIA intends to rendition Assange to a Jordanian prison where he'll be sodomised and then taken to Gitmo where he'll simply be kept.

He could have been smart and been living in some tribal area of Pakistan. But being a bit of an egoist he gave himself up and the circus followed.

Just thinking: Wouldn't it be unfortunate if a major fire was to break out inside the Ecuadorian embassy. He'd have to leave the building then...

The Human Rights Watch report on Ecuador

World Report 2012: Ecuador | Human Rights Watch

They seem to be well suited. Assange needs Ecuador for something to hide behind. Ecuador neers Assange for a bit of international posturing.
