Slitting the throat to let the animal bleed out really isn't that barbaric compared to other things you might do. It is far more humane than what happens in the wild.

Yes, but not as humane as a captive bolt effectively applied. I've seen this done and it really is instantaneous.

Also, the halal way doesn't seem very well regulated (though neither is the traditional method); various groups such as Viva & peta have done exposes on what goes on in these places - often the knife is blunt & the animals have their necks hacked open. Worse still, when the cut isn't clean it can cause the ends of the severed arteries to swell & restrict the blood loss meaning that the animal is often conscious for many minutes.

Fair enough if none of this bothers you I suppose but I struggle with it & as far as I'm concerned all animals should be stunned prior to slaughter.

That is how it used to be done all over the UK. Then the law was changed as it was deemed a cruel and barbaric method of slaughter and a requirement to stun the animal first was brought in.
Slaughter houses didnt used to be well policed so the stun guns were often misused but when used properly they are very effective.

You say it is not that bad. Think about that for a minute. If we were killing you do you think you would be more stressed if it was sudden black out or would you prefer to be strung up by your feet and have your throat cut?

I dont think that is strictly true is it? Can pork ever be halal? I thought it just became "acceptable" when needs must.

My understanding is that Islam & Judaism are quite forgiving in cases of necessity. You eat what you need to survive, a bit like Christianity its a target to avoid breaking the rules, sometimes its not possible.

It is also permissible to alter your behaviour (within limits) to fit in.

Stun the livestock & then slit them and most people wouldn't object.
