    - heavy people = fat people = not going to live very long
    - light people = fit people = will live a long time
    Reality;
    - heavy people are sometimes fat, can be muscular, but not there's not much relation to life expectancy
    - people who look very fat on the outside might actually be quite fit, muscular and healthy and have a normal life expectancy
    - people who look thin might be fat on the inside, and that's the group that dies early; 'thin fatties'. Very few insurers have done the sums on this as they're only interested in BMI.
It's not really a good thing, BMI. We get checked over every year, and I'd have to cut legs and arms off to get to my ideal BMI as I am larger framed, but fit as a butchers. I am 6' and 15 stone, and this is an issue, according to BMI, yet am as fit as I have ever been. Its an utterly stupid measure. The quack actually said, that I'd have to lose muscle, to get into my ideal BMI.

Insane really. I think a treadmill/breathing test should be applied in these things.

How is everyone getting on now? I lost loads earlier in the year but put a bit back on when I went injured a few months ago. Starting to drop again now - I am off alcohol, chocolate, sweets, bread, cereal, potatoes. And all the exercise I can manage which is not easy on that diet.

Good, but you need more carbs. Averaging 33km/h on 2 hour bike rides now. Rode out last wednesday with the local racing club who ride a constant 40 or so in a 'train', which was do-able with occasional sprints at about 45 to get to the front. I was quite proud to be keeping up with them seeing as I'm a 40 year old nearly 16 stone crocked rugby player and they're all about 11 stone and in their 20s.

So there were plenty of compliments on my fitness. But then after about 50kms when I was really startiing to feel a bit knackered somebody did something tragic; he decided we'd go up and over a long viaduct over the river, which involved about 400 metres going uphill. Now I don't necessarily mind going uphill; that's what you have 30 gears on a racer for; one for every point of my BMI. Shift down, pedal fast and eventually you get to the top of the hill. Oh no, that's not how the racers do it; they just blast up the hill at the same speed as on the flat and then whizz down the other side. Now I thought 'I'll use my weight to my advantage; I'll catch the little buggers on the way down'. And I did, but that was the problem; they got to have a nice long rest on the way down, but I barely got a breather, and then the bastard in charge of it all said 'right, turn round boys, back over the viaduct'. After 4 trips back and forth over that bleeding viaduct I shouted 'let's stop for a minute' and then lent over a wall to in the river. Again, many compliments about fitness and commitment etc (never underestimate the back row forwards), and off we went in the direction of home. Then I came across another cultural difference with rugby players. I noticed a pub, and suggested we go in for a beer. Definite no-no, only milk and muesli bars for these boys.

Should I keep reporting on the cycling adventures of a crocked rugby player who's really a bit too big to race bicycles?

Been steadyish since reaching my target in May. Go up a couple, down a couple. Just had 3 days of ridiculous amounts of food in Milan so suspect up rather than down at the moment. Last night's failure to understand the menu meant I ended up eating what could best be described as Kentucky Fried T-bone steak.

Trying to get a bit more exercise on the agenda.

Went to buy some new suits today.

Seem to have dropped 4 sizes.

All thanks to the "cloggers diet" (aka the food's so tulip over there you end up cooking properly and having time UK exercise).

Though am watching the food intake being back in the smoke and resisting the urge to indulge and walking everywhere instead of taking the tube.

Still walking everyday and still hovering around my target weight of just over 13.5 stone.
              Happy days!

still running and weight training most every day. loving it too. am fitter at 46 than i have ever been. weight is off and staying off. even a two week holiday didn't impact it - which was a surprise though the exercise in the first few weeks back was tough. it is time for an updated wardrobe - i've had enough of baggy trousers.

I'll be interested to hear how everyone gets on when its cold dark nights. Statistically 99% of people put back on more than they lost sadly.

Had to buy a new belt

Down to middle of my target range and BMI is below 25 now. I have a routine that seems to be working for me so am happy.

As it happens, I started this regime at the end of last October, and actually lost most of my weight during the cold dark nights.
Mind you, after this summer it is difficult to distinguish between the seasons.
