I think these notice period clauses need to be reworded as a cancelation policy

You try and pull out of most commercial agreements with zero notice and you will be charged for the privilege, I don't see why contractors should be any different.
Your time has been booked to be with a client which means turning down other work. It is not unreasonable to expect some sort of recompense for the loss of business.

It would be nice to see, but I can't see the agencies getting their heads round that one.

Strangely enough, the sample PCG contracts refer to a notice period, but there is nothing in there that would fit this kind of clause.

If you are daft enough to let your agent change it to what he wants to suit him it doesn't matter what the contract says though

Yeah that's what the agent tell you, they're probably still collecting the other 20 days to put in there own pocket.

Sounds very underhand. It wouldn't be professional of you to do the same to them.

Not much you can do about it but I imagine you'd think twice about working for that client and agency again if you have the choice.

I'm going to alter my next contract and see what happens. I currently have a "5 days notice" clause, I will add an early termination charge into the contract as well which takes effect from when the contract is signed.
