In terms of credit though, the definition of "afford" isn't as obvious. I don't have the ready cash sitting about even to buy a brand new Focus but we could afford one. Same with a house.

I have been close to several really big crashes on the m4 (not in, or causing them I am keen to point out!) and I have to say that when the metal gets bent I want to be in a BLOODY large car that has 300mm vented grooved disks and 8 pot callipers. What's the point in earning 100k while sat in a 5K pile of asian tin.

Just don't buy big cars on finance.

Have yuo checked the NCAP ratings? Kia Cee'd is better than a BMW 5 series and on a par with a Mercedes

I rarely see accidents where the driver hits a block of concrete square on at exactly 30mph. I have, however seen the aftermath of several accidents involving "family" cars with 5 star ratings. The best thing you can have from a safety point of view is good enough brakes to stop you hitting another object in a way that your car becomes unstable and either spins or rolls as a result...

which is why the Cee'd comes with all round disk brakes.

Anyway - the best thing you can have from a safety point of view is an ability to drive safely and avoid the 's in the first place.

From my motorway experience it seems to be BMW's and Audis that are most likely to rear end someone else.
