Given the choice I'd buy an Audi over a Cee'd but I wouldn't drive around thinking my choice of transport made my bollox any bigger than the next mans.

I agree with Zoiderman here, there are some brands of car that send signals. I am not advocating getting into debt but make a tradeoff on age of car with cost and get yourself a car your wife and kids will feel proud to step into.
