Is that because they're scared of the big bruiser who has turned up to their nice restaurant?

The ability to eat out alone is one of the markers of adulthood.
If you have difficulty doing this you are still a child.

I don't go out so much alone these days, simply because I'm too busy (practising or playing Rockabilly ), but I used to really enjoy going to a Pizza place and having a beer and a Pizza on my own, especially with a glass of real German beer "vom Fass".
            I'm alright Jack

Possibly, but I'm a very gentle bruiser. Sometimes if I'm a in a restaurant where they don't know me some waitress or waiter will offer me a newspaper (usually de Telegraaf, which makes the Daily Wail look sensible) or a magazine to read, and appear to feel sorry for me. I don't really get that; I know that some people need to have company all the time but I'm quite able to sit happily on my own. Not that I avoid company, but I don't need it constantly.

So to all those who think someone sitting eating on his own is miserable or lonely; no, I'm not, so don't worry about me, don't feel sorry for me, and if I want to eat my meal with other people I'll phone a friend and go and eat with them.

Or, for gentlemen who enjoy female company but don't want to put their relationship at risk,

I think you've just had a lot more practice due to lack of alternatives.

If you're having a nice 3 course lunch, what do you actually do then? Or is the whole point that you are doing nothing?

I tend to pick somewhere good for people watching, and watch people.
While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'

Yep. I quite like a little peace between courses to just do nothing. The rest of the day I'm busy, so it's quite relaxing to have nothing to do for a little while each day.
