No, you are missing the point. As was mentioned earlier, skill up or ship out.Originally posted by PatriotMan View PostYour missing the point if Comapnies continue to outsource whether India, Malaysia or Poland the IT contract market will erode in the UK and regardless what skills you might have all people will find it hard to find work. Look at call centres for example 1000's of people in the UK lost their jobs because of it. It obviously doesnt affect you, but spend a moment and think about the peeple it does affect.
The world has changed. IT has changed. Manufacturing has changed. We are now competing against labor much cheaper than us. That doesn't mean the end of IT & Manufacturing. It means innovation, it means design and architecture, it means project managing, it means developing new products / new processes / new more efficient ways of working, it means outsourcing the mundane offshore and taking advantage of cheaper pools of resource. Coding for $ is dead. You need to have a broad range of skills, think for yourself, value add, outside of the box, be a generalist. That is the way that On-shore IT Contracting is going. Offshore will always be about a specific skill a specific need.

Which is hardly surprising because over time most contractors get more skills and keep themselves above the general masses.Originally posted by cojak View PostBasically it boils down to I'm alright Jack.
I've focussed on becoming more client focussed so that I'm the interface between them and the real techies. Provided I can talk both lingos, solve problems and ensure the person paying the bills is happy its not a problem. If all you want to do is work against a script then you have problems because I can send that script anywhere.
We've started to use Africa for minor bits of work and that makes Indian look really expensive (plus its cheapish to fly to as its a tourist resort).merely at clientco for the entertainmentComment

Yep. Next step is to get my own offshore operation or at least the ability to call upon them and (or) work out how to visit multiple clients a week by bringing a substitute in to handle the more day to day stuff.Originally posted by MarillionFan View PostDing, ding, ding.
Its a 5 year plan but I do think it may work.Last edited by eek; 7 August 2011, 20:05.merely at clientco for the entertainmentComment
