More variable than that really. eg Arab countries, Oman is pretty civilised in its treatment of non Muslims and women, according to the US State Dept human rights reports anyway.
Probably depends where in specific countries you go to, can be big differences between tourist and remoter rural areas. India and Indonesia are apparently places of huge variation. Dunno what it's like now but when I was hitching in Turkey in the 70s one was told to stay out of certain bits, strangers were inclined to get stones chucked at them.bloggoth
