I thought the whole point of Jazz was it was the opposite of soulless. Famous jazz musicians on TV seem to generally be much more involved with the emotional side of their music than rock bands who try hard to look like they couldn't care less.

Yes, but there's also a "contemplative" rambling style of quiet "background" jazz, without all the pizazz (or indeed without any).

It's the kind they play at 2am on Radio 2 or somewhere like that, even Radio 3 sometimes (and boy does it send one to sleep )

The 'point' of jazz is the same 'point' as all other music genres.

You either like it or you don't. I like it a lot:

Jazz was originally a breakaway from the 'rules' of classical music. If you like any form of non classical music then it is most probably originated from jazz HTH.
