To sum up this thread, the AA screwed me, it was my own fault. I think that covers the popular opinion.

My first car was just such a VW Beetle. Could never reach it with my foot though so used to have to swoop down and do it by hand. Woke the passengers in the back up, I can tell you!!Originally posted by Sysman View PostEarly VW Beetles didn't have a fuel gauge. There was a switch on the floor that you flicked with your foot.
It also had an arrangement whereby there were some wires and levers situated between the front seats designed to open some flaps behind the legs of the rear-seat passengers and allow heat in from the engine.
I am sure that on most beetles these soon rusted to a standstill, either open or closed depending on their last positioning before the rust took hold.
In mine they were permanently on, meaning that on any long trip, anyone sitting in the back would slowly get their calfs chargrilled. Ouch!!
Made the mistake of putting a case full of Vinyl LPs behind the seat on a long trip. All would have been well had my friend not taken one out to inspect it, and found that it keeled over in his hand. No more "Queen Greatest Hits" on vinyl!!
Made a wacky wobbly frisbee though!
Ah........happy days!!

Originally posted by kandr View PostAt the weekend, took the family to a halloween party in a remote part of the country, I realised I was running low on petrol, but the party was near a town with a petrol station (the only one for miles though).
To my horror the station was closed, and with my beemer reporting that it could only manage another 4-5 miles I was in trouble.
I called the AA which I am not a member and had to join for a year, which I though was OK, might come in useful and I go the most basic which was £69.
By the time the guy got to the end they had added another £80, which applies if you use the AA within the first 3 days!!!
The AA guy was out within the hour, but he also charged me for the 2 gallon of petrol (£14).
Feckers!
That was shaping up to be a bloody good ghost story up until paragraph 3.Comment

No, a uniformed patrolman with a long list of physical afflictions shafted you up the arse; it was your own choice, and you paid 80 quid for it.Originally posted by kandr View PostTo sum up this thread, the AA screwed me, it was my own fault. And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? The bit where I described the patrolman, was because Clippy said he was the patrolman, in case anyone missed that.Originally posted by Mich the Tester View PostNo, a uniformed patrolman with a long list of physical afflictions shafted you up the arse; it was your own choice, and you paid 80 quid for it.

You think wrong.Originally posted by kandr View PostTo sum up this thread, the AA screwed me, it was my own fault. I think that covers the popular opinion.
You were charged extra because you weren't a member prior to needing their assistance. If they'd helped you for the same price as helping a regular, paid-up member, no one would ever bother joining until they needed the service.
What part of this don't you understand? You won't be alerting anyone to anything with a mouthful of mixed seeds.Comment

Yes, the clue was in the word "most".Originally posted by kandr View PostAlso most intelligent people haven't run out of petrol, seems like a sweeping statement.
