My Train Journey This Morning

Oops! I nearly forgot my daily contribution today. As you'll all know from my roundabouts thread (lol!) I actually drove to work today. I did, however, have a train journey yesterday. I went on a class 21 bubble car diesel multiple unit done out in the classic green BR livery. Where? I hear you enquire. Well, I'll tell you! I was going from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead on the West Somerset Railway. Wow! What an experience. The seats had that lovely sort of checkerboard upholstery that you also used to get on Routemaster buses and there was a Chrome grabrail at the end of each seat. Best of all was hearing that classic dmu rasp as the unit went through the gears as it pulled out of each station. Just couldn't resist hanging out the window each time this happened lol! Anyway, a wizard day was rounded off with a slap up cream tea at Mother Leakey's Tea Rooms in Minehead.

We had a gongloozler in our carriage this morning. A gongoozler is someone who stands in the inter carriage area and proceeds to spend the whole journey stepping on the pad that opens the sliding door causing much annoyance to the occupants of the carriage.

Some things never change. I refer to the rudeness of rail staff which IMO is still every bit as bad as in the days of BR in the 80s. The reason I mention this is that ,for undisclosed reasons, I took the train from Westbury (Wilts) this morning. Got to the station early for a quick price (Westbury used to be an old stomping ground of mine) and saw that my train was already at the platform. Oh joy, a 1 car bog unit! Thinking I'd make the most of a bad situation I went over to the driver and asked him if I could cab the unit (regular readers of my column will know that cabbing a loco means getting onto the footplate so you can write a C next to the number in your Ian Allen Combined). And do you know what?He said no! So I pleaded with him and the miserable git told me to piss off and snapped the window shut! Some people!
