It might not be safe actually. Volcanic ash is an extremely fine dust which gets into the tiniest blood vessels in your lungs and blocks them, preventing the absorption of oxygen by the blood. In other words, breathing it in can suffocate you. It’s a bit like asbestos but worse. There probably won't be much of the ash on your clothes but still best to rinse them before wearing them.
